... UNCHAPTER 3 ...

At the end of the preamble, Lutor Spinoza deals with the first miracle, the simplest of the three. And also the easiest to bring about: the miracle of the wedding at Canaan.

Modern technology, Spinoza writes, demonstrated that 30 grams of sweetened cyanoflavin, dissolved in ten liters of water, with the addition of 1% ethyl catalyst make the ten liters of water into ten liters of good wine. Sort of like California wine. The reaction time is about ten minutes. To make it faster one just doubles the amount of catalyst (Lutor Spinoza reports that he got the formula from the yearly update, 1959, of World Chemical Industries, under the supervision of the American Food and Drug Administration). However, beside the formula, the obvious observation is the speed with which one can obtain a good wine without months of fermentation. Just dissolve the solute in water, and presto, it’s done. Sure, it isn’t a ’55 Chateau Lafitte. But what would they know, those peasants, from a ’55 Chateau Lafitte?
