ANTROPOECCENTRICO
... UNCHAPTER 3 ...

Nothing doing. At the end of the tenth hour, Aesculapius certifies Agato’s physical death.
Three days of preparation for a public funeral ensue. Agato’s body is washed and dressed with a white toga and draped in golden cloth (the magistrate’s high dress). His face remains contracted and stony. His arms still rigid in the death throes. At the end of the third day Agato’s body is exposed on the Acropolis. Hundreds of torches, surrounded by braziers down to the valley, and ten virgin maidens from Athena’s temple sit in wake.
The morning of the fourth day, when the torches are almost extinguished and the virgins prepare to return to the temple, Agato opens his eyes wide, and, Aesculapius swears, says he is hungry.
